Where do you find your inspiration?
Social media has made it so easy to constantly consume new and interesting content that keeps my wheels turning and pushes me to think in new ways. I love following @Refinery29 on Instagram because they’re constantly partnering with artists of every variety. It’s how I’ve discovered some of my favorite accounts and sparked more than a few ideas I’ve used for clients or personal projects.
What do you wish people knew about your job?
I feel like social media can sometimes be dismissed as a less serious and viable way to reach your audience when really it’s one of the most important parts to get right. Gone are the days of phonebooks and appointment television. When consumers are Googling to find goods and services, some of the highest ranking pages that will come up are social media channels. It’s where people go to get a quick look into who you are as a brand and what you can offer them. If you aren’t nailing your social presence, you have to work that much harder with every other touchpoint to earn their consideration. Your social team is made up of storytellers who have to find new ways to convey your message multiple times each day in a world where the rules and tools are constantly changing. Moral of this story: Go hug your social media manager.
What’s the weirdest thing on your desk?
A fish. I inherited an office fish that sits in a pretty inconspicuous location, and people are always surprised when they see a little movement out of the corner of their eye. It’s a good conversation starter.
